Springer Nature updates AI policies and guidance
Springer Nature has updated its AI editorial policies and introduced new guidance for authors, reviewers, and editors to support the responsible and transparent use of AI during the research publishing process. This new framework is based on the principles of accountability, transparency, human oversight, and confidentiality in editorial assessment.
Instead of focusing only on whether AI has been used, the updated policies consider how it has been used, its potential impact, the level of risk involved, and whether appropriate human oversight has been maintained. For example, uses such as language improvement and data cleaning may present relatively low risks, while uses that influence interpretation, evaluation, or decision-making require greater scrutiny and transparency. Any use of AI that replaces accountable human judgment, such as delegating peer review to an AI tool, remains prohibited.
Springer Nature notes that it plans to review the policies periodically to ensure that they remain aligned with developments in AI, regulations, and publishing practices.
