Springer Nature reaches 50% open access milestone
Springer Nature has announced that 50% of its primary research articles were published open access (OA) as of the end of 2024, meeting the ambitious target it set in 2021. As detailed in the company’s 2024 Annual Report, this milestone reflects sustained investment in transformative agreements, the launch of 68 new full OA journals, and the introduction of flexible publishing models to improve accessibility.
The publisher also highlighted regional advances, such as the expansion of transformative agreements in Japan and new OA teams in China and India. Looking ahead, Springer Nature plans to further scale OA publishing through responsible use of technology and AI. A full summary of this development is available on the STM Publishing News website.
