Springer Nature introduces AI tools for detecting problematic research content
Springer Nature has launched Geppetto and SnappShot, two new AI tools designed to detect AI-generated content and problematic images in research papers. Geppetto works by analyzing sections of a paper for consistency and assigns scores to indicate the likelihood of AI generation, identifying high-risk sections for human review. SnappShot is an image integrity analysis tool that will initially be used to check for duplications and other integrity issues in gel and blot images, with plans to expand to additional image types.
Both tools aim to prevent the publication of fraudulent papers and maintain research integrity by flagging suspicious content. Importantly, these AI tools do not make a decision on whether a submission should proceed to peer review, but instead signal to the editorial staff the need for further human evaluation.
