STM Solutions releases a paper mill detection tool capable of scanning submissions for signs of publication ethics violations
We recently posted about the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) developing tools for detecting publication ethics violations in an effort to preserve the integrity of scientific research. Of increasing concern is the proliferation of so-called “paper mills”—organizations that produce and sell fraudulent scientific manuscripts written by ghost writers. A paper mill detection tool was just released as part of the STM Integrity Hub that is able to scan submissions for signs of fraud. Publishers can upload a manuscript directly to the stand-alone web application and are alerted if any issues are detected.
The initial version of this tool is currently available only to a number of participating publishers in the STM Integrity Hub, but as its detection capabilities are further developed, it will be made more widely available to other publishers and integrated into submission systems.
