STM releases a new tool for detecting duplicate submissions
The STM Integrity Hub has expanded it suite of tools available to publishers in efforts to preserve academic integrity. A new tool developed by Elsevier allows users to detect duplicate manuscript submissions across journals and publishing houses. This new tool scans the full text, going beyond metadata analysis, to catch unethical submissions before they enter peer review.
Duplicate publication, in which the same research is submitted to multiple journals at once, violates standard publishing policies and can distort the scientific record. It leads to redundancy and can sometimes signal deeper ethical issues, such as manipulation by paper mills. Detecting and preventing this practice is essential to upholding the integrity of academic publishing.
The duplicate submission service is currently being tested with a select number of publishers and will be rolled out to all STM participating publishers later this year.
