Clarivate expands the Journal Impact Factor to all Web of Science Core Collection journals, assigning a JIF to more than 9000 more journals
Clarivate Plc has released the 2023 update to its annual Journal Citation Reports, which includes valuable metrics for over 21,500 journals that have met the quality standards for inclusion in the Web of Science index.
This update includes many changes, the most notable being the expansion of the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) across all Web of Science Core Collection journals accepted as of January 1, 2023. The JIF is a widely used metric for assessing the influence of a journal, and had previously been limited to the most impactful science and social science journals. With this change, however, the JIF now covers all disciplines, and more than 9000 journals from over 3000 publishers have been assigned a JIF for the first time.
Another key change is to the format of the JIF itself. By reducing the JIF to include only one decimal place (from the previous three decimal places of earlier versions), Clarivate hopes to encourage authors to consider other important descriptors in their decisions to publish, such as the Journal Citation Indicator, a normalized metric that allows for easier interpretation and cross-disciplinary comparison.
